MARK E. SHERMAN

REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER / RESTAURANT OWNER

Innovation. Restoration. Transformation.

About.

For over 30 years, Mark Sherman has devoted his life to restoration and development - giving old, forgotten buildings new life through the power of vision and creativity.

In 2001, Mark acquired the historic Dobson Mills Complex in the neighborhood of East Falls, Philadelphia. Originally used to manufacture yarn, Dobson Mills produced wool yarn, blankets, overcoat material, and various other types of textiles. During the Civil War, Dobson designed army blankets and uniforms for the Union troops. Mark’s vision was to transform this now abandoned fabric mill into an affordable, sustainable residential and commercial business community in the East Falls area. He ultimately developed a mix of residential lofts and commercial suites, while utilizing the original structure of the former mills. This community became known as Sherman Mills, and is now comprised of myriad artists, business owners, and residents, with new development projects continuously in motion.

In 2017, Mark extended his unique vision to more projects as President of Mark Lane Properties.Mark Lane Properties owns Midway Arts in Coatesville, PA, and New York Wire Works in York, PA.

Mark has also been involved in the culinary world since joining the Navy at 17 years old, where he spent 10 years as a Mess Management Specialist. In 2011, he teamed up with renowned chef, Arthur Cavaliere, to unveil a one-of-a-kind culinary experience Philadelphia had yet to encounter. With their strong trust and loyalty to each other, they created what has become one of the most unique and celebrated restaurants in all of the tri-state area. Inspired by its location along the banks of the Schuylkill River, In Riva (meaning, “along the banks” in Italian) was born.

Mark has received several awards for his work, including most recently, the Tammy Cansler-Miles Excellence in Economic and Community Development Award. This award "recognizes an individual, agency, or company that has demonstrated a dedication to economic growth in the City of Coatesville through catalytic real estate development, effective programmatic enhancements, and/or inspiring social impact."

Mark's creative communities and initiatives have been integral to the revitalization of neighborhoods by being hubs for the arts, retail, and small business. His entities have injected new life into their surrounding communities while supporting and celebrating local arts and entrepreneurship.
